There is still more to be seen from Back 4 Blood, and hopefully it can surpass the legacy of Left 4 Dead. There’s also crossplay, so PC players can play with their console counterparts.īack 4 Blood can be seen as an all-new Left 4 Dead game, so if you want more of the same with modern upgrades, hold out for the full release of Back 4 Blood. It is still getting new updates regularly, with the game also coming to the Nintendo Switch later this year. World War Z, on the other hand, presents a different feel overall, but is certainly a ton of fun. If you want to keep things simple and would rather relive the classics, stick to Left 4 Dead. Surprisingly, Left 4 Dead and its sequel is still being kept alive through its fanbase, with the sequel getting an all-new fanmade update last year. The special zombies are also not distinct enough compared to Left 4 Dead. At higher difficulty levels, it can feel cheap when the game throws at players a bunch of special zombies all at once. That really keeps things fresh.īesides that, from what was shown, there is a lack of balance in the game’s dynamic procedural difficulty generation. There are also “Corruption Cards”, which can make or break a run, as it modifies the level to a certain extent, like adding additional objectives to the level. Its sequel definitely came a little too quickly after the first game, being only a year apart, but it was an otherwise welcome upgrade.Įach player gets to draw a card that adds passive bonuses to the level, like 15 per cent more ammo capacity or +15 health. There’s not much that Left 4 Dead did wrong, being a tight experience that offered a lot of replayability in its cooperative and competitive modes. These include the emphasis on four-player cooperative action, specialised zombie types and dynamic scenarios that change with each playthrough. So let’s take a look at what each zombie game does differently and which one is the right one for you.Īs the progenitors of this genre, Left 4 Dead and its sequel introduced a number of hallmarks to the genre that the following two games would emulate. Back 4 Blood releases on PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One & Series S|X, and PC on October 12.Even the original developers of Left 4 Dead began wanting to revive this concept, which led to Turtle Rock Studios branching off from Valve to make their own zombie shooter, Back 4 Blood.Īfter an open beta period and an upcoming release this October, Back 4 Blood has shown off what it does differently compared to its predecessors. The beta itself has enjoyed quite a bit of success and I’m happy for the game, but I think what it doesn’t do makes my decision not to partake easier. While replacing that mode with a horde mode makes some sense for the game’s balance, it also removes a unique mode without much competition in the marketplace with a fairly rote one alongside six or seven games that are also doing the same kinds of campaign maps. I’d estimate about 99% of that time was spent in Versus Campaign. I just think it’s a deal breaker, personally. Which is fine and fair and it’s their game to make. This balance meant that trying to see who could get further in a stage doesn’t work quite as well. Similarly, Survivors specialize in defensive equipment. Turtle Rock’s reasoning for this is that Back 4 Blood’s Special Infected are a focused on ambushing more than slowing down or stopping. ![]() They’ve been asked so often, that “WHERE IS MY CAMPAIGN VERSUS MODE?” has somewhat aggressively been added to the Frequently Asked Questions channel in the Discord, with “We do not have plans to have a campaign versus mode at this time” as the answer. On the Turtle Rock Studios Discord, where fans and developers both hang out, Turtle Rock has confirmed in recent days that Campaign Versus won’t make it into Back 4 Blood. Not to mention, the gore/dismemberment is terrible in Back 4 Blood. Left 4 Dead is a great game because of how simple yet fun it is. ![]() Everyone kind of assumed this would also be the case for Back 4 Blood. The card system is so stupid and over complicated. It was endlessly enjoyable and decidedly unique, keeping players on Left 4 Dead for years beyond its release. One team plays as Survivors, then it changes to the other team to make a go of it. In Versus Campaign, two teams of four players each play through the game’s campaign maps, with the Survivors trying to make it to the end and the Special Infected trying to stop them. ![]() In Left 4 Dead and the sequel Left 4 Dead 2, Versus Campaign was a multiplayer mode where a lot of players spent their time after playing through the regular campaigns. It is, in no subtle way, Turtle Rock stating that Left 4 Dead fans can expect to pick up right where they left off with Back 4 Blood - except for one of the previous game’s most popular modes, Versus Campaign. You know Back 4 Blood, the new game from Left 4 Dead developers Turtle Rock that is positioning itself as the true Left 4 Dead successor to the extent that they even borrowed the title’s prominent numerical for its own game.
